「FUI — Furniture User Interface」という課題。椅子をユーザーインターフェースとして見よ、と言われて、椅子から類推をかけた。日本語では「社長の椅子を狙う」のように、椅子は権力の象徴として使われる。では、いまの社会で力を持つものは何か。「21世紀の石油」と呼ばれるデータだ。
ASCII Chair は、二進法の文字コード ASCII を木の棒で物理的に表現した、座れる椅子。たとえば「A」は「01000001」になり、1の位置に木が立つ。この作品では「Takayuki」の8文字をASCIIに変換して木で綴った。見る人は、自分の名前に並べ替えることができる。
椅子に座る人は、物理的に表現されたデータに支えられている。同時に、人がデータを尻に敷いてもいる。人間とデータの力の均衡を、そのまま形にした。
The brief: see the chair as a user interface. In Japanese, a chair symbolizes power — "aiming for the president's chair." What has power today? Data, "the oil of the 21st century."
ASCII Chair physically represents binary character code in wooden bars — for "A", "01000001", a bar stands at each "1". Here, the eight letters of "Takayuki" are spelled in wood; viewers can rearrange it into their own name.
The person sitting is supported by physically represented data — and at the same time, sits on it. The balance of power between human and data, made into a form.
