子どものころ、布団に入りながら、縁側の障子に映る祖父母の影を見て安心した。姿や表情が見えなくても、誰かがそこにいると感じられる。その記憶が、Kageの手がかりになった。
大学院留学中にパンデミックが始まり、学校や職場の人と「なんとなく同じ場所にいる」時間が失われた。ビデオ通話で話すことはできる。でも、誰かが席を立ったり、飲み物を持って戻ってきたりする、会話の外側の動きは届きにくい。
体験 — 話しかけなくても、動きが届く
ウェブカメラで捉えた人の動きを、離れた部屋の壁にプロジェクターで影として映す。ストレッチや、飲み物を取りにいく動きが、相手の部屋に現れる。顔や会話の内容を伝えるビデオ通話とは違う、気配の伝わり方を試した。
Starting point — shadows on a shoji screen
As a child, I found comfort in my grandparents’ shadows on the shoji screen while lying in bed. I could feel someone was there without seeing a face or expression. That memory became a starting point for Kage.
The pandemic began while I was studying abroad. Video calls let us talk, but the small movements of sharing a place—someone standing up or returning with a drink—became harder to encounter.
Experience — movement without a call
A webcam captures a person’s movements and a projector casts them as shadows on a wall in another room. A stretch or a walk to get a drink appears in the other space. The prototype explores how presence might travel beyond a face and a conversation.
制作 — 身近な機材で気配を映す
2021年、3か月の制作。ウェブカメラとプロジェクターを組み合わせ、離れた場所の動きを影として再現する試作をつくった。
この試作で探っていること
人とつながるために、いつも会話や顔の映像が必要なのだろうか。Kageでは、何気ない動きに目を向けている。会話の外側にある動きから、気配を共有する方法を探っている。
Making — presence with familiar equipment
Made over three months in 2021, the prototype combines a webcam and a projector to reproduce movements from another space as shadows.
What it explores
Does connecting always require conversation or a face on a screen? Kage draws attention to incidental movements. It explores how presence might be shared through movements outside a conversation.
